Charles Babbage

“We chose Charles Babbage, father of much of modern computing, as our inspiration because he was a magnificent failure.” -Brendan Greeley, The Economist

First heard of him when I was in my Third grade. My Computer teacher used to repeat the words ”Charles Babbage is the father of Computer”. And from that point on I always believed that Babbage invented the first computer on earth. Later when I saw The Machine that Changed the World I realized that it’s not just about inventing, it’s more than that. It’s about the idea of making a machine do the mental work that’s only possible by the human intellect.

Someone said it right. ”The Industrial revolution was about amplifying the abilities of the physical human. And the Computer/Information Revolution has been about amplifying the capabilities of the mental human.
